Description

Mount Washington (1,917 m) is the highest peak in the northeastern United States and the most visited summit in New England. It is famous for its extreme weather — the highest wind speed ever recorded at a staffed station (372 km/h in 1934) was measured here. Despite its modest elevation, the mountain is accessible year-round by the historic Cog Railway (since 1869), the Auto Road, or several hiking trails of varying difficulty.

Important Information

Auto Road toll ($35/car) or Cog Railway ($89/adult) — both reach summit easily. Summit has observatory, museum, café and gift shop open year-round. Hiking: Tuckerman Ravine Trail (easy–moderate, ~5 hrs round trip). Weather changes extremely fast — always bring warm layers even in summer.
